Green Collar Careers - Solar
Heating System Bill of Materials
Specifications for a solar heating system will drive the content
for the Bill of Materials (BOM) required.
The Solar Heat Site Survey workbook includes a worksheet Solar Heat
BOM that identifies the list of materials required for nearly all
Closed Loop solar water heating systems. Components are grouped
by classes:
- SC - Solar Collectors
- ST - Storage Tank
- CL - Closed Loop subsystem
- VE - Valves, Gauges, and Expansion Tank for Closed Loop
subsystem
- IRM - Installer Related Materials
Data Fields in the Columns are:
- Class
- Description
- Quantity
- Manufacturer/Vendor
- Model Number
- Specifications
The purpose of this BOM is to identify the content of the system
along with specifications and sources. You may want to add a
column for component cost to add up the total system cost for system
pricing. You will want to keep these records and provide the
customer with a detailed list of equipment - just don't include the
costing data. SC Component Data
Specifications should include the panel size and any ratings
provided by the vendor such as efficiency or ratings. ST
Component Data
Specifications should include storage volume, insulation rating,
and whether the ST unit is dual or single purpose. Dual
purpose units should include the water heater specifications.
CL Component Data
Specifications should include:
- Pumps - voltage, current rating, flow volume (Gallons per
Hour) pressure
- Solar Panel - peak voltage, peak current, size
- Controller - voltage, current, battery, input channels,
thermocouple type, output relay rating, or output power rating
- Thermocouples - type
VE Component Data
Specifications should include:
- Pipe Diameters
- Joint type (soldered, crimp, ferrule)
- Gauges - range, thread size of coupling
- Size and pressure ratings for Expansion Tank and Pressure
Relief Valves
IRM Component Data
Quantities for the system should be given a liberal estimate based on
the Site Survey. Mounting Stilts and Mounting Brackets should
specify the intended tilt angles and the roof or structural mounting
type. The BOM Worksheet has been provided as a guideline and may
have other materials added depending on the system. Note
that all the materials provided by the solar heating kit
wholesaler should be identified. This BOM will be valuable
for the installer to review along with the SRCC compliant
installation data provided by the solar heating kit
wholesaler.
